About the Better Future Foundation Amodu (BFFA)

The Better Future Foundation Amodu (BFFA) is a non-profit organisation founded in June 2001 by Dr Valeria Dora and Mr Collins Okonkwo. BFFA began its operations in September 2002. The following year, on 10 September 2003, the foundation was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in Abuja, Nigeria. Its aim is to provide talented but financially disadvantaged children from the village of Amodu, in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, with access to secondary education. BFFA is convinced that education is the most important key to independence, opportunity and long-term social development.

Origin and Motivation

The foundation was established out of the desire to open up new educational opportunities for children from the village of Amodu after they complete primary school. In the region, attending secondary school is financially out of reach for many families.

This is exactly where BFFA steps in: it supports pupils whose potential and willingness to learn are evident, but who would have no access to further education without assistance.

The Village of Amodu

Amodu is located in the Nkanu West district of Enugu State in south-eastern Nigeria, a few kilometres south of the city of Enugu. Most families make a living from subsistence farming and small-scale trade.

Although education is highly valued within the village community, infrastructural and financial resources are limited. The existing primary schools play a central role in village life, but some of them are in poor structural condition.

Education in the Local Community

Most of the children supported by BFFA attended one of the primary schools in Amodu, including Community Primary School Amodu and Union Primary School Amodu. These schools lay the foundation for the children’s further education.
After completing primary school, BFFA supports selected pupils in attending a secondary school. Each year, between five and seven students are chosen to receive support for secondary education.

Impact and Development

Since its foundation, BFFA has supported many children throughout their educational journey. Several scholarship recipients have successfully completed their school education, and some have even been supported through to university.
The foundation would like to support even more young people all the way to graduation from higher education, but this depends on additional financial resources.
