Scholarship

Objective of the Scholarship Programme

The scholarship programme of the Better Future Foundation Amodu (BFFA) is intended for talented children from the village of Amodu in Nigeria whose families cannot afford secondary education. Its aim is to support pupils after they complete primary school in attending a secondary school, thereby opening up long-term educational opportunities and future prospects for them.

Who Can Receive a Scholarship?

BFFA selects its scholarship recipients fairly and impartially. The selection is carried out by a carefully appointed Planning Committee, which conducts interviews with applicants and recommends suitable candidates.

The requirements for receiving a scholarship are:

  • successful completion of primary school
  • passing the entrance examination for secondary school
    (Common Entrance Examination)
  • proof that the family is unable to cover the costs of further education themselves

In order to support as many families as possible, usually one child per family and school year is granted a scholarship. In justified cases, a second child from the same family may be awarded a scholarship at a later stage.

Duration of Support

BFFA awards scholarships for secondary education, which in Nigeria generally lasts six years.

The support is provided in two phases:

Junior Secondary School (JSS)

Duration: usually three years

Senior Secondary School (SSS)

A further three years

Scholarship recipients are initially admitted for the first phase (JSS). A requirement for continuing the scholarship is passing the JSS final examination at the end of the third year of secondary school.

One of BFFA’s long-term goals is to enable particularly high-achieving graduates to pursue a university education as well. In the past, three former scholarship recipients have already been supported through to university graduation.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

The BFFA scholarship covers the key costs associated with attending school. Its aim is to provide pupils with a stable and reliable learning environment.

School Fees

BFFA covers the school fees of the supported pupils as well as additional school charges, for example for sports lessons.

School Books

Scholarship recipients receive school books and exercise books each school year. The books are purchased and distributed directly by the Planning Committee to ensure they are used for their intended purpose.

School Uniform

As a rule, pupils receive two school uniforms and two pairs of school sandals per school year. If needed, an additional uniform is provided in the following year.

Desks and Chairs

Newly admitted scholarship recipients receive their own school desk and chair. As these are often not provided by the schools or the state, BFFA helps ensure that each pupil has a dedicated place to learn and store their materials.

Transport Allowance

Since secondary schools are not always located in the village of Amodu, scholarship recipients receive an amount each semester to cover transport costs. This also includes a small allowance for personal expenses.

T-Shirts

Each year, T-shirts with the BFFA logo are distributed to the scholarship recipients.

Applying for a Scholarship

Interested pupils can apply for a scholarship. The application is intended to present their personal situation, educational background and motivation. All information provided will be treated confidentially.
